Originally named Quanax-Huato, or 'place of frogs', by the Tarascan
Indians, and then exploited for its silver by the Spanish conquistadores,
Guanajuato has long been attracting visitors and settlers. It's
set in a narrow gorge amid wild, breathtaking scenery, and has
been an important centre for mining since the mid-16th century.
It's also a thriving student hub and today you can see both locals
and visitors enjoying the elegant buildings, colonial architecture
and fine museums of this central Mexican World Heritage site.
